Questions

Dangerous goods questions

Can’t find your answer? Our team is a phone call away.

Call 011 873 4786
Which dangerous goods do you move?

Every hazard class except class 1 explosives: gases, flammable liquids, flammable solids, oxidisers and organic peroxides, toxic and infectious substances, radioactive material, corrosives and miscellaneous dangerous goods. We’re permitted and suitably equipped for all of them.

What do I need to give you?

As the consignor, you classify each product and give us its UN number and proper shipping name, a signed dangerous goods declaration, and the goods packed and labelled to standard. You also supply the placards or the information for them, and a qualified person to supervise the loading. At delivery, your consignee supervises the offloading.

Do you supply Tremcards?

Yes. Shipping & General supplies transport emergency cards (Tremcards) for every UN-referenced product to clients who use our dangerous goods transport. The card travels in the cab, and our crews read and understand it before they load the product.

What goes on the placards?

Under SANS 10232-1, the vehicle carries a plain orange danger diamond on the front and a placard on the rear and both sides. The placard shows the UN number, or MIXED LOAD for more than one product, two 24-hour advice numbers, and the hazard class diamond. The placard check above shows what yours will say.

What licence do your drivers hold?

The certifications and licence endorsements the law requires. For dangerous goods above the exempt quantities, that’s a professional driving permit in category D. Our drivers train regularly, with refresher courses as the regulations change.

Can different classes travel together?

Some can and some can’t. The law requires a mixed load to be compatible, and SANS 10231 sets which classes may share a vehicle. Tell us every product on the load and we check them before loading.

Does a small quantity need all this?

Maybe not all of it. Small quantities can be exempt from some rules, but the exempt quantity depends on each product and its packing group, and for some products there is none. We check every UN number rather than assume.

Can you store dangerous goods?

Yes. Our Germiston depot has a hazchem section, accredited by the Ekurhuleni municipality for storing several hazard classes, and we handle, stage and store hazardous containers there.

Do you collect dangerous goods containers from Durban?

Yes. We move containerised dangerous goods from Durban’s port, through our Germiston depot if needed, to you, with one provider all the way. Our full container loads run on the N3.
